We offer the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 and Level 2 Awards in Wine

WSET Level 1 Award in Wine

A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine.

If you’re new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you’ll receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

What will you learn?

  • The key stages in grape growing and wine-making.
  • The main types and styles of wine.
  • The principal wine grapes and their characteristics.
  • The key characteristics of prominent wines.
  • How to store and serve wine.
  • How to pair food and wine.
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).

How long do you need to study?

This qualification has a minimum requirement of six hours of study time in class, including the examination, from a WSET approved tutor.

How will you be assessed?

Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions. Get full details here.

How much does it cost?

£235. This includes all the tuition and resources needed for successful course completion plus lunch. 8 wines will be sampled on the course. Exam resits will cost extra (we currently have a 100% pass rate with no resits)

WSET Level 2 Award in Wine

A beginner to intermediate level study of wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine.

For people wanting enlightenment about the marvellous world of wine, this qualification provides an enjoyable exploration of the subject. You’ll learn about the main factors influencing the production of wine, explore the different types and styles of wine, gain the skills to describe wines accurately using the Level 2 WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting, and learn to make informed food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

What will you learn?

  • How winemaking and bottle-ageing influence the style and quality of wine.
  • How the environment, grape-growing options, wine-making and bottle ageing influence the style and quality of wines made from the principal grape varieties.
  • The style and quality of wines produced from regionally important black and white grape varieties.
  • How the production process can influence the styles of sparkling and fortified wines.
  • The key principles involved in the storage and service of wine, and in the pairing of food and wine.
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

How long do you need to study?

This qualification has a minimum requirement of 17 hours guided learning time in class (including 1 hour exam) from a WSET approved tutor and 11 hours of personal study time.

How will you be assessed?

Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions over a 1-hour period.

How much does it cost?

£560. The price includes all the tuition and resources needed for the award plus lunch. 43 wines will be sampled on the course. Exam resits will cost extra.
